Why Social Media Makes Us Feel Like We Never Have Enough (Even When We Do)

mindset social media Aug 26, 2026

I saw a TikTok recently that genuinely made me stop scrolling. A girl was saying that a Rolex isn't even that impressive in Dubai because there are "better" watches. I don't know watches. I have an Apple watch that I'm more than happy with. That's not the point.

The point is this: even a Rolex isn't enough anymore.

If something that most people would consider a symbol of success can suddenly be labelled "average", then what chance do the rest of us have of ever feeling like we've arrived?

Social Media Comparison and Money: The Trap

One of the biggest reasons social media makes us feel like we never have enough is comparison.

You might be earning more than you were two years ago. You might have savings. You might finally feel stable. Then you scroll.

Someone bought property younger than you. Someone launched a bigger business. Someone is flying first class. Someone just "hit six figures" again.

Suddenly your progress feels small.

When your benchmark is constantly changing, nothing ever feels like enough. What felt like a win last month feels average today.

And in cities like Dubai especially, where wealth is visible and lifestyle is elevated, it's amplified. The exposure is constant. The upgrades are everywhere.

Lifestyle Inflation and Moving Goalposts

There's a reason "lifestyle inflation" is such a commonly searched money topic. As your income increases, your expectations increase with it. The nicer apartment becomes normal. The brunch becomes standard. The designer item becomes entry-level. You adjust quickly. Then you want the next level.

The issue isn't wanting more. Ambition is healthy. Growth is powerful.

The issue is when "more" becomes your only measure of success.

If everything is relative, you will always feel behind someone.

Does More Money Actually Make You Happier?

Another popular question people search: does money buy happiness? Money can absolutely improve your quality of life. It can remove stress. It can create options. It can give you security.

But it doesn't solve comparison. Social media comparison and money are the cause of financial downfall for many.

Because comparison isn't about numbers. It's about perception.

For me, wealth doesn't feel like performance. It feels like peace.

It's checking my bank account and feeling calm. It's knowing my investments are ticking over quietly in the background. It's being able to book flights home without stress. It's sleeping well.

That's financial confidence.

And it looks very different from what performs well on social media.

The Real Question

You can build a life that looks impressive online. Or you can build a life that feels secure and aligned offline. Social media will always show you "better." There will always be someone earning more, spending more, upgrading faster.

The real question is: are you chasing better... or are you building enough?

Wealth feels different when it's intentional.
